Summary |
A good way to create a positive communication atmosphere early is with a "Welcome Letter". The letter should do four things:
Welcome the child: Say something positive about the child; if you are anticipating a challenging year, this may be your best chance to say something positive early!
Introduce yourself: The parents are giving you their child for 6 hours a day for 8 months. Many of them will be interested to know a little bit more about you, including teaching experiences, your school-related interests, and community involvement (as appropriate). Also, this is a good time to let the parents know the best way of getting in touch with you (work phone number, best time to call, email address)
Invite parents to school: Let parents know the date for the first formal visit to school, as well as any informal opportunities for visiting or volunteering that may exist.
Provide information on needed materials: What will the child be provided with at school? Pencils, scissors, rulers? What should they bring from home?
